4 door diesel coupes

In this segment there aren't a lot of models about to talk of; Mercedes-Benz CLS, BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe, Audi A5 Sportback and Volkswagen CC.

Mercedes-Benz CLS

Mercedes-Benz has extensively revised the four-door CLS Coupé and the CLS Shooting Brake. Both design icons now feature a honed front section. Their further upgraded interior boasts lots of new, perfectly handcrafted details, combining contemporary luxury with passionate sportiness. They also bring ground-breaking technical innovations to the road. The futuristic MULTIBEAM LED headlamps open up new dimensions in lighting systems. High-performance, precision LED modules automatically provide the best possible illumination, whatever the road and traffic conditions. Cutting edge technology on board also includes the 9G-TRONIC 9 speed automatic transmission, new, powerful engines, intelligently networked driver assistance and safety systems as well as a progressive multimedia system with internet. The AMG variants CLS 63 AMG Coupé and Shooting Brake developing up to 585 HP assume pole position in the power output stakes. The diverse new Mercedes connect me online services are also included on all models.

Mercedes-Benz founded the four-door coupé segment ten years ago with the CLS, thus underlining its leading role in automotive design. The CLS combined for the first time the elegance and dynamism of a coupé with the comfort and functionality of a saloon. It was also the first vehicle to offer dynamic LED High Performance headlamps as an option, turning it into the lighting icon. In 2012, Mercedes‑Benz built on the success of the CLS with the CLS Shooting Brake. With this sporty five-door model, the premium brand from Stuttgart once again demonstrated its concept creativity. As an extraordinary form of a sports car with five seats and a large tailgate, the CLS Shooting Brake is an attractive companion for active people that shy away from the mainstream and who are unwilling to sacrifice sportiness or luggage space as part of stylish touring. In this way the Shooting Brake set another highlight in the line of innovative Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicles. Both the CLS Coupé and the CLS Shooting Brake have long since established themselves as style icons with particular charisma, and will also continue to be unique in their segment.

Prof Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development: "With the CLS Coupé and the CLS Shooting Brake we have built design icons which also set the pulse racing faster in their latest incarnation courtesy of their enthralling lines. With new high-tech ingredients such as the innovative MULTIBEAM LED headlamps which start a new chapter in lighting design, the 9 speed automatic transmission or the progressive multimedia system, both models also define new cutting-edge technology."

The scintillating design of the CLS-Class with its exciting proportions has been subtly adapted to high-tech aspirations. It steadfastly remains a compelling proposition with its long bonnet, narrow window line with frameless side windows and dynamically downwards sloping roof. The CLS Shooting Brake offers additional load capacity with up to 1550 litres of space for luggage or sport and leisure equipment thanks to its sporty, flat roof that extends through to the rear and five doors.

Overall the design of the latest generation of the CLS Coupé and CLS Shooting Brake comes across as even more dynamic. This is thanks to a new, expressive diamond radiator grille, a striking front bumper with large air intakes, MULTIBEAM LED headlamps as well as new, slightly darkened tail lights with multi-level function.

New dimensions in lighting systems

Both models now come as standard with all-LED headlamps in a new design. Alternatively both vehicle models are available as an option with the new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps as designed and developed by Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz is opening a new chapter in lighting systems with this innovation. Since the MULTIBEAM LED technology combines the very best of today's lighting technologies and can optimally adjust the light distribution instantly and automatically to virtually any traffic situation, it always ensures thus far unrivalled broad and bright illumination of the road surface and edge of the carriageway for high performance and precision without dazzling other car drivers.

The camera-based Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus provides the information for the illumination. If it detects illuminated oncoming vehicles or vehicles ahead, it drives each of the individual 24 high-performance LEDs in a matrix light source electronically so that individual areas of the road are specifically masked in accordance with the particular situation. The headlamp control function combines the matrix light source with the tried-and-trusted technology of the LED Intelligent Light System, thus increasing the precision of today's matrix light sources and setting up a main beam gap with minimal width. This prevents other drivers from being dazzled, while drivers in the CLS Coupé and in the CLS Shooting Brake always benefit from the best possible - in other words brightest illumination of the road and road verges. The anti-dazzle main beam can be switched on permanently. Thus the new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps open up new dimensions in safety from which other road users can mutually benefit.

In addition to the camera on the windscreen, this new lighting system uses four control units per vehicle, which calculate the ideal light pattern 100 times per second and control all 24 high-performance LEDs in each precision LED module quickly and individually. Each LED is dimmable in 255 stages.

New MULTIBEAM LED headlamps provide exceptionally fast and precise, anti-dazzle continuous main beam and light up the road surface and its edges much more brightly in many situations.

Best visibility on bends and roundabouts

As well as the high-performance, precision LED module, each MULTIBEAM LED headlamp also features a module for the low-beam headlamp, which can be swivelled outwards by up to twelve degrees. This provides an active light function, which is also camera-controlled, with unprecedented characteristics. For instance, it offers a preview function which already swivels the active light function when the driver has yet not turned the wheels. Thus it provides optimum illumination of the bend early on. The active light function already swivels back to the straight-ahead position before the end of the bend according to the particular situation. This allows the driver to identify dangers earlier when entering and exiting bends. The anticipatory control allows an additional range of between 30 and 60 metres depending on the traffic situation.

The roundabout light is also unique, which activates the cornering light function modules on the left and right before entering a roundabout in order to provide the best visibility on all sides at an early stage. The navigation system provides the headlamps with details of the locations of roundabouts along the route.

Friendly welcome: welcome home function

As a charming unusual function, the new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps use their multifunction optical fibres not just as daytime running lamps, turn signal lamp and turn signal lamp, but they also welcome the driver by bringing this optical fibre to life with a friendly blue light when the vehicle is opened.

Sporty interior with contemporary luxury

Ample space, unadorned, sporty elegance, perfect craftsmanship and high-quality materials exert the stylistic influence on the interior of the CLS family. The new generation reinforces this impression by emphasising sportiness, exclusivity and functionality even more.

The new free standing colour display in the head unit with its 20.3 cm screen diagonal (8 inch) adds to the state of the art feel and will help define the dashboard's contemporary looks. Other new features include a redesigned three-spoke sports steering wheel and a host of exquisite details which underscore the interior's high quality both in visual and tactile terms. The central control panel in the centre console has four instead of the previous two buttons, thus requiring fewer operating steps in many cases. Five attractive interior colours, six trim finishes as well as grades of leather ranging from leather to Exclusive PASSION leather will be available in future and offer a host of potential individualisation options.

Fulfilling personal preferences

The new AMG Line Plus supplements the previously available design and equipment lines Exterior Sports package and AMG Line, thus extending individualisation options to include a very sportily oriented version which expressively emphasises dynamism and exclusivity. A special Night package is scheduled to give buyers further choice at the end of the year. New designo interior packages are also available.

Efficient, sporty engines

Thrilling dynamism and exemplary efficiency - those are the strengths of the five engines available in the new generation of the CLS-Class. All fulfil the Euro 6 standard. A new addition in this class is the CLS 220 BlueTEC with 4 cylinder diesel engine featuring fourth generation common rail direct injection, two-stage turbocharging and BlueTEC technology. It produces 170 HP and offers maximum torque of 400 Nm. 205 HP and torque of 500 NM are on tap from the 4 cylinder diesel unit in the CLS 250 BlueTEC. The V6 diesel unit in the CLS 350 BlueTEC exceeds these figures with 258 HP and torque of 620 NM.

Equally new is the V6 petrol engine with turbocharging in the CLS 400 with a 3.5 L displacement and biturbo drive. Thanks to its output potential and its phenomenal torque at low engine speeds it sets new standards in its segment. Compared to its predecessor with a naturally aspirated engine it produces 20 kW more with 333 HP. Its torque increases by 110 Nm to 480 Nm and is available in the wide engine speed range of 1200 to 4000 rpm. The CLS 500 with 408 HP and up to 600 NM of torque leads the field in the power output ratings.

Four instead of the previous two models will be available in future with permanent all-wheel drive. Newcomers include the CLS 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC and the CLS 400 4MATIC

Maximum performance and efficiency: the AMG 5.5 L V8 biturbo engine

557 HP to 585 HP and 720 to 800 NM - the AMG 5.5 L V8 biturbo engine ranks among the world's most efficient series-production eight-cylinder engines when it comes to peak output, torque and fuel consumption. The CLS 63 AMG with 557 HP and rear wheel drive consumes 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined) (231 grams CO2 per kilometre). The variant with 410 kW and performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all wheel drive and the S-Model with 585 HP and all wheel drive come in only slightly above at 10.4 to 10.6 litres per 100 km (243 grams to 248 grams CO2/km). All CLS 63 AMG models already meet the second stage of the EURO 6 emissions standard.

New automatic transmission with nine gears

Cutting-edge technology also comes in the shape of 9G-TRONIC, the world's first 9 speed automatic transmission with hydrodynamic torque converter in the premium segment, which is used in the CLS 220 BlueTEC, CLS 250 BlueTEC, CLS 350 BlueTEC and CLS 500. This innovation builds on the strengths of the 7G-TRONIC PLUS, which hitherto has set the benchmark in terms of efficiency, comfort and dynamism. With nine forward gears the 9G‑TRONIC manages to reduce fuel consumption, while further enhancing shift comfort and agility.

Hallmark Mercedes high level of safety

To make top-class safety available for everyone, the CLS-Class will in future be fitted with a host of new assistance systems along with existing systems with upgraded functionality. Standard-fit features include the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, which can help prevent rear-end collisions - if necessary through autonomous braking.

The state-of-the-art assistance systems from the S-Class can also be fitted as an option. These include DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection, PRE-SAFE® PLUS, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC including lateral parking manoeuvres and a 360° camera.

Optimum connectivity

A completely new multimedia generation will offer intuitive operation in the CLS Coupé and in the CLS Shooting Brake, including elaborate animations and visual effects which present all the functions in a clear and highly attractive manner.

The Audio 20 CD or optional COMAND Online infotainment systems are available in combination with the new, free-standing display in the head unit with its 20.3 cm screen diagonal (8 inch). Both enable the internet to be surfed without restrictions when the vehicle is stationary. The prerequisite is a Bluetooth®-capable mobile phone with data option. Equally new is a now standard and an integrated Media Interface to connect an iPod® and iPhone®.

In conjunction with COMAND Online, Mercedes-Benz Apps such as Weather, GoogleTM Local Search with StreetView and Panoramio, destination/route download and Facebook can be used while on the move. Audio and video playback is possible from various sources, e.g. via Bluetooth®, from the Apple iPod® and iPhone®, from SD card, USB stick or CD/DVD.

COMAND Online also provides the LINGUATRONIC voice control system; digital TV/radio reception is also available as an option.

Modern-style navigation

In the version with pre-installation the basic Audio 20 CD system can be supplemented with the user-friendly Garmin® MAP PILOT navigation system. Its strengths include 3D views with exact representation of streets and buildings and photo-realistic junction and lane assistants. The navigation software and the map data are stored on an SD card, which is simply inserted in the dedicated slot of the Audio 20 CD with preparation for the Garmin® MAP PILOT.

COMAND Online with fast 3D hard disc navigation, topographical map display, photo-realistic 3D buildings and 3D map rotations as well as display of NASA satellite images provides a decidedly sensuous experience. System features include an animated compass and display of Google Maps on the head unit. The navigation system can also provide real-time information about the situation on the roads when it receives its traffic data in COMAND Online via the internet by means of the Live Traffic Information service.

Telephony via Bluetooth® with HD Voice capability as standard

The basic Audio 20 CD system and COMAND Online both support HD Voice-capable basic telephony, which connects the mobile phone to the vehicle via a standardised Bluetooth® interface. HD Voice provides much better voice quality. In conjunction with convenience telephony the high-speed LTE network can also be used in future if a compatible smartphone with a relevant contract is used.

Mercedes connect me - new online connection to the car

With the new-generation CLS-Class a new package of services is also being launched in Europe under the name "Mercedes connect me". Mercedes-Benz emergency call, accident, maintenance and breakdown management are available via a standard-fit KOM module with its own SIM card fitted in the vehicle. Customers can also connect to their vehicle via the internet anytime, anywhere via "connect.mercedes.me" and, for example, check how full the tank is.

BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe

A combination of intoxicating sports performance, majestic ride comfort, a luxurious interior ambience and innovative equipment features marks out the members of the BMW 6-Series model range. The new BMW 6-Series Convertible, new BMW 6-Series Coupe and new BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe meet the highest expectations of a sporting luxury car in terms of driving dynamics, comfort, advanced technology and imposing elegance. Eyecatching accents and pinpoint refinements highlight the aesthetics of their body design and the exclusive flair of their interiors. The introduction of the Design Pure Experience and Design Pure Excellence equipment lines, meanwhile, gives customers attractive options when it comes to injecting these extraordinary cars with an even sportier or more luxurious aura.

A sporty driving experience lies at the heart of everything the new BMW 6-Series Convertible, new BMW 6-Series Coupe and new BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe stand for. The performance capability of their engines, which boast cutting-edge BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, is further accentuated by the sports exhaust system now fitted as standard on all petrol variants. Evidence of the enormous dynamic potential offered by the BMW 6-Series model range comes in the form of the high-performance sports cars it has spawned: the BMW M6 Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 10.3 l/100 km [27.4 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 239 g/km), BMW M6 Coupe (fuel consumption combined: 9.9 l/100 km [28.5 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 232 g/km) and BMW M6 Gran Coupe (fuel consumption combined: 9.9 l/100 km [28.5 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 232 g/km). Highlights including a 560 HP V8 engine and bespoke suspension technology imbue this impressive triumvirate with track-specification performance attributes.

Sports performance and luxury - a combination rich in tradition

The new BMW 6-Series model range follows in a BMW tradition of legendary dream cars which now stretches back more than 75 years. Presented in 1937, the BMW 327 Sports Coupe was the most exclusive model in the company's line-up at the time. Then came the BMW 503 Coupe and BMW 507 Roadster, which were powered by the car world's first aluminium eightcylinder engine and continue to enthral as 1950s style icons to this day. And later on, the BMW 2800 CS of 1968 pulled back the curtain on an era of luxury cars which took a whole new approach to combining sports performance and luxury. The BMW 3.0 CS, BMW 3.0 CSi and BMW 3.0 CSL followed in the tyre tracks of the 2800 CS in the years up to 1973. Designed for action in motor sport, these three models enjoyed several years of dominance on the racing stage. On the road, meanwhile, they represented a beacon of style and an expression of joy in superior performance.

Since 1976 these unmistakable characteristics have been grouped together in the BMW line-up under the model designation "6". The first-generation BMW 6-Series shone not only with its outstanding driving dynamics, but also its state-of-the-art comfort and safety technology. Its successor, unveiled in 2003, radiated a thoroughly progressive air, its dynamic appearance complemented by a wealth of innovations. The new variants added to the 6-Series line-up also broke new ground - and fundamentally enriched the driving experience on offer in the luxury class. The debut of the BMW 6-Series Convertible in 2004 saw driving pleasure in an exclusive sports car and the joy of advanced technology married with open-top enjoyment for the first time. And the world's sportiest six-cylinder diesel engine, introduced in the BMW 635d Coupe and BMW 635d Convertible in 2007, added another alluring facet to the driving pleasure offered by cars in this segment: impressive pulling power and exceptional efficiency were its hallmark qualities.

One model series, three different characters

The latest generation of the BMW 6-Series takes the dynamics, aesthetics, luxury and innovation offered by the model series to new heights. Moreover, the expansion of the range to span three body variants has ensured that driving pleasure in a luxury BMW can be experienced in an even wider variety of ways. The BMW 6-Series Convertible, BMW 6-Series Coupe and BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe provide customers with a choice of three distinctive characters, the introduction of the brand's first ever four-door Coupe giving the BMW 6-Series' popularity fresh momentum. Almost one in two newly registered BMW 6-Series cars is now a Gran Coupe. Worldwide, nigh-on 80,000 units of the current-generation BMW 6-Series have been sold in total since the market launch of the Convertible in March 2011.

The new BMW 6-Series Convertible is all about exclusive open-top driving enjoyment, comprising majestic ride comfort and richly engaging performance attributes in equal measure. A major element of the four-seater's extrovert charisma is the transition between the body and the interior, which has been designed to evoke the character of a boat deck - as is typical of BMW Convertibles - when the roof is down. The sophisticated fabric soft-top of the 6-Series Convertible stands out with its unique "fin" architecture, complete with a glass rear window that opens separately, and offers unrestricted all-season usability and unrivalled acoustic comfort.

The new BMW 6-Series Coupe embodies the classical character of an exclusive sports car. Its two-door body exudes an athletic and elegant aesthetic while its modern interior ambience is designed to immerse four people in a dynamic driving experience. The latest round of design and powertrain upgrades lends extra potency to the two door model's muscular appearance and sporting potential.

The BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe conjures up a new balance of dynamic excellence, elegance and luxury. The latest addition to the BMW 6-Series range blends the sports performance and aesthetics of a coupe with the extended functionality of a four door car. Its distinctive proportions and longer wheelbase accentuate the exterior's irresistible radiance. The interior of the BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe delivers luxurious long-distance comfort for the driver and passengers in four full size seats and offers a third seat in the rear that is suitable for shorter journeys. Detail refinements showcase both the elegance of the body design and the exclusive ambience of the interior.

The design: A harmony of sporting presence and exclusive elegance

The balance between sporting dynamics and majestic ride comfort which defines the character of the BMW 6-Series is reflected in a body design exuding athleticism, power and elegance. Hallmark BMW proportions, precise lines and fluently moulded surfaces come together in an unmistakable design language that serves as a signature feature of the BMW 6-Series as a whole and is adapted to suit the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe respectively.

An array of awards based on both public surveys and the assessments of expert judges bear testament to the appeal of the design developed for the BMW 6-Series model range. The BMW 6-Series Convertible, BMW 6-Series Coupe and BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe all won the renowned red dot award for outstanding product design at the first time of asking. The two-door models have also been recognised with the international Good Design Award and the iF product design award presented by the International Forum Design, while the BMW 6-Series Convertible has claimed the German Design Award. Meanwhile, in the Automotive Brand Contest - an international brand and design competition initiated by the German Design Council - the BMW 6-Series Coupe and BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe topped the exterior design category two years in succession. In readers' polls conducted by German motoring magazine auto, motor und sport, the BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe first claimed the "Autonis" award for the "Best new design of the year" and subsequently won the luxury category in the vote for "Best car of the year".

More powerful, sportier, sharper: BMW kidney grille and front apron

All the models in the new BMW 6-Series line-up stand out with an adeptly modified design that exudes powerful sports performance and, at the same time, emphasises the exclusive elegance of these luxury cars. The BMW kidney grille - standing prominently in the centre of the front end, as ever - is now even more eye-catching. The number of bars in the kidney grille has been reduced from 10 to nine, and the larger openings are an indication of the amount of cooling air required by the powerful engines. The new contours of the kidney grille bars (in aluminium matt on the eight-cylinder variants and black on the remaining models) underline the forward-surging stance of the radiator grille element. The new front apron, whose lower air intake is now a single stylistic unit and therefore comes across as ultra-wide, radiates sports performance and solidity. The front foglamps, which are positioned at the far outer edges of the front end, consist of three adjacent LED units and now feature a decorative surround. This trim element is chrome on the new BMW 6-Series Convertible and comes in high-gloss black for the new BMW 6-Series Coupe and new BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe.

The full-LED headlights fitted as standard on all the models in the new BMW 6-Series line-up include a newly developed and extremely sophisticated design for the light sources. This has brought about a new interpretation of the signature BMW look created by the twin circular headlights. The low beam light is emitted from the two upper reflectors, the main beam light from the two lower reflectors. The indicators are now integrated into the accent strip cutting across the top of the headlight units.

Side view: aerodynamically optimised exterior mirrors, newly designed model badge for the BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe

Like the modified design of the front apron, newly styled exterior mirrors also contribute to the optimised aerodynamics of the models in the new BMW 6-Series, while the side indicators are now integrated into the exterior mirrors in the form of slim horizontal light strips.

The standalone proportions of the BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe and the exclusive elegance of its lines are emphasised even more clearly by a new design for the side window surrounds at the trailing edge of the rear doors. There, a graphic element bearing "Gran Coupe" lettering guides the eye to the "counter-swing" at the foot of the C-pillar (known as the Hofmeister kink). On the new BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe this element is made from black painted aluminium and bears raised, embossed lettering.

Rear apron strongly emphasises the cars' width

On all models in the BMW 6-Series, flared wheel arches and a rear-end structure visually stretched by horizontal lines provide a vivid stylistic showcase for the cars' wide track and resultant surefooted handling. This effect is further enhanced by a chrome strip in the bumper trim. The rear apron of the six-cylinder models also features larger surrounds for the exhaust system's tailpipe embellishers, whose diameter has been increased from 80 to 90 millimetres.

Elsewhere, a newly designed 20 inch multi-spoke variant has been added to the selection of optional light-alloy wheels. And the range of exterior paintwork finishes includes the new colour shades Jatoba metallic, Cashmere Silver metallic, Glacier Silver metallic, Mediterranean Blue metallic and Melbourne Red metallic.

Luxurious interior ambience, newly designed surfaces, optional bicolour leather trim

The signature interior design for the new BMW 6-Series Convertible, new BMW 6-Series Coupe and new BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe is dominated by the driver-focused cockpit, a front passenger area enveloped by elegantly sweeping surfaces and a seamless connection between the front seats and rear compartment - all of which makes it a recipe for exclusive comfort in a stylishly luxurious ambience.

In the new BMW 6-Series models, the high-gloss black surfaces of the centre console around the control units for the audio system and air conditioning form a harmonious and elegant unit with the black-panel displays of the standard-fitted automatic climate control. The slim, precise chrome surround of the iDrive operating system's freestanding Control Display and the frameless design of its glass cover create a particularly contemporary and sophisticated feel. And the use of LED units for the illumination of the footwells, door exits and glove compartment provides an extremely even distribution of light.

As an alternative to the standard Dakota leather trim, customers can specify Exclusive Nappa leather with extended features, which is now also available for the new BMW 6-Series models in the bi-colour variants Ivory White/Black and Cognac/Black. Fineline Brown fine-wood trim has been added to the selection of optional interior trim strips.

Equipment, Design Pure Experience, Design Pure Excellence, M Sport package and BMW Individual: Bespoke luxury, aesthetics and driving pleasure

The new BMW 6-Series generates an intense form of driving pleasure regardless of the body variant specified and the engine fitted. It also boasts a beguilingly exclusive edge thanks to its luxurious interior ambience, extensive spread of standard equipment and high-quality options. As well as the 8 speed Steptronic sport transmission and LED headlights, all models are fitted as standard with the ConnectedDrive navigation package, Dakota leather trim, heated and electrically adjustable seats for the driver and front passenger (including memory function), two-zone automatic climate control with extended features, an electrically adjustable sports leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons, cruise control with braking function, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, the Professional radio, a hi-fi loudspeaker system and a hands-free facility with USB audio interface.

The standard lightweight integral seats for the driver and front passenger come with an integrated belt system, whose optimised retraction mechanism uses electric assistance to enhance comfort. Customers can order their car with sports or comfort seats as an option for the driver and front passenger. The comfort seats are also available with the "active" function and active seat ventilation. Exclusive Nappa leather with extended features can be specified as an alternative to standard leather trim. Both the leather variants earmarked for the new BMW 6-Series Convertible are treated with SunReflective technology, which reduces the degree to which the surfaces are heated by the sun's rays. The BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe can also be ordered with heated rear seats.

Premiere for Design Pure Experience and Design Pure Excellence. Two equipment lines pave the way for targeted personalisation in the configuration of the new BMW 6-Series models. The Design Pure Experience line highlights the car's sporting aura through the specification of a BMW kidney grille with high gloss black bars, BMW Individual High-gloss Shadow Line trim, likewise high-gloss black tailpipe embellishers for the exhaust system and 19 inch bi-colour light-alloy wheels in exclusive starspoke design. The interior sees Nappa leather trim in the new bi-colour variant Cognac/Black sharing the limelight with interior trim strips in Fineline Brown fine wood.

The Design Pure Excellence option accentuates the exclusive appearance of the new BMW 6-Series model range with the addition of 19 inch light-alloy wheels and luxurious interior appointments. These include the newly designed Nappa leather trim in Ivory White/Black, a leather-covered instrument panel with contrast stitching, ceramic applications for the controls and interior trim strips in Poplar Grain Grey fine wood. In addition, both equipment lines include metallic paintwork and optional ambient lightning complete with illuminated door sill finishers.

Supreme dynamics and exclusivity: M Sport package and BMW Individual features

An M Sport package can be specified for the new BMW 6-Series Convertible, the new BMW 6-Series Coupe and the new BMW Series Gran Coupe to further optimise their dynamic aura and performance attributes. The Sport package - configured to suit the individual model - includes features such as an M aerodynamic package (with specific body components for the front end, side skirts and rear apron), BMW Individual High-gloss Shadow Line trim, tailpipe embellishers in dark chrome, black painted brake callipers and 19-inch light-alloy wheels in M double-spoke design. 20-inch light-alloy wheels in M double-spoke design are also available. M Carbon Black metallic paintwork can be specified exclusively in conjunction with the M Sport package. Meanwhile, additions including sports seats in M-specific Alcantara/Nappa leather trim with blue contrast stitching, an M leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons and gearshift paddles, Aluminium Hexagon interior trim strips, door sill finishers with an M logo and an M driver's footrest ensure the design of the interior fulfils the brief of concentrated driving pleasure. A BMW Individual roof liner in Anthracite is also part of the M Sport package for the new BMW 6-Series Coupe and new BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe.

The BMW Individual options offered for the new BMW 6-Series models satisfy the desire of customers to maximise exclusivity and infuse the exterior and interior of the car with their personal style. The BMW Individual paintwork finishes, special paintwork finishes and matt paintwork finishes stand out with their exceptional richness and fascinating colour effects. The Frozen Brilliant White matt shade - a new addition to the BMW Individual range - gives the body surfaces the appearance of being covered in an even layer of ice and, in so doing, showcases the muscular contours of the new BMW 6-Series models to particularly enthralling effect. The 20-inch, forged BMW Individual light-alloy wheels in V-spoke design also play their part in achieving a striking appearance.

BMW Individual fine-grain Merino full-leather trim, with carefully selected and meticulously prepared raw materials taking centre stage, helps create an exclusive interior design. The leather used for the seats, door panel trim, centre console, armrests and door pulls has a natural open-pored structure; the soft and breathable surfaces are elegant to the eye and offer excellent comfort. Exquisite materials and meticulous handcraftsmanship are defining features of the interior appointments from BMW Individual. The range also includes a BMW Individual roof liner in Alcantara for the BMW 6-Series Coupe and BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe, illuminated door sill finishers with BMW Individual lettering, BMW Individual interior trim strips and a BMW Individual wood inlay for the leather steering wheel. More unusual requests from customers can also be met, extending all the way to one-off creations conjured entirely in the BMW Individual Manufactory.

Options for bespoke driving pleasure and comfort

Customers can also dip into the list of high-quality optional extras to further enhance levels of driving pleasure and comfort in the new BMW 6-Series models. These include Comfort Access and the Soft Close Automatic function for the doors, a glass tilting sunroof for the new BMW 6-Series Coupe and the new BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe, and a draught-stop for the BMW 6-Series Convertible which reduces turbulence when driving with the roof down. A four-zone automatic climate control system is available for the BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe, while electrically operated sunblinds can be ordered for the rear window of the new BMW 6-Series Coupe and new BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe, and for the rear side windows of the four-door model.

The iDrive operating system's Touch Controller has a touch-sensitive surface for inputting characters. Customers can bring further variety to the range of incar entertainment, not to mention maximise their listening pleasure, by specifying options such as a TV function, a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) receiver, the Harman Kardon HiFi system and the Bang & Olufsen high-end surround-sound system.

The driving experience: Feel the dynamics, savour the poise and assurance

Supreme power development, impressive refinement and exemplary efficiency are attributes shared by all the engines available for the new BMW 6-Series Convertible, new BMW 6-Series Coupe and new BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe. The range consists of a petrol V8 producing 450 HP, a 320 HP 6 cylinder inline petrol unit and a straight-six diesel with 313 HP. All enjoy the benefits of the BMW TwinPower Turbo technology developed under the BMW EfficientDynamics banner, all meet the EU6 exhaust emissions standard and all link up as standard with an 8 speed Steptronic sport transmission.

As an alternative to sending their engine power to the rear wheels - as is customary for BMW cars - all new BMW 6-Series model variants can also be specified with the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system. The variable distribution of drive between the front and rear wheels not only optimises traction and directional stability in all weather and road conditions, it also noticeably enhances cornering dynamics and acceleration. BMW xDrive further improves the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) performance of all the 6-Series models. The best figures here are recorded by the eight-cylinder BMW 650i xDrive Coupe and BMW 650i xDrive Gran Coupe, which both complete the sprint in 4.4 seconds.

Standard-fitted sports exhaust system for an emotion-rich sound

The engines powering the new BMW 6-Series models are designed to deliver captivating performance, as a new addition to the range of standard equipment is not afraid to emphasise. The BMW 640i Convertible, BMW 640i Coupe and BMW 640i Gran Coupe are now equipped with a sports exhaust system, which provides an emotionally dramatic soundtrack to their engines' instantaneous and sustained wave of power.

The system features a switchable exhaust valve, whose position can be adjusted using the Driving Experience Control switch. In SPORT and SPORT+ modes, the valve opens to reduce exhaust backpressure and generates a dramatic aural response. The engine management system allows further acoustic optimisations, including dynamic load-reversal damping.

Superior sports performance, optimised efficiency

BMW TwinPower Turbo technology helps the engines to develop their power instantaneously, gives them a vivacious appetite for revs and imbues them with impressive efficiency. The extensive array of BMW EfficientDynamics technology fitted as standard and the cars' optimised aerodynamic properties also contribute to a further reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. For example, the BMW 640i Convertible, BMW 640i Coupe and BMW 640i Gran Coupe - all powered by a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine - each burn 0.2 litres less fuel per 100 kilometres than their direct predecessors. The diesel models achieve a similar reduction in their fuel consumption and emissions. With average economy of 5.5 - 5.2 litres per 100 kilometres (54.3 - 51.4 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 147 - 139 grams per kilometre (figures as per the EU test cycle, depending on the tyre format), the new BMW 640d Coupe sets the efficiency benchmark.

The 8 speed Steptronic sport transmission also plays a role in the powertrain's outstanding effectiveness thanks to its excellent internal efficiency, while its impressive fast-shifting ability sharpens the sporting characteristics of the new BMW 6-Series models. As well as gearshift paddles on the steering wheel, the 8 speed Steptronic sport transmission also comes with a Launch Control function, which enables the driver to power away from the line with maximum dynamic force.

Cutting-edge suspension systems enhance dynamics and comfort

State-of-the-art suspension technology honed even more precisely to each individual model strikes a fine balance between dynamic potency and comfort. And customers can specify sophisticated options to complement this technology: Dynamic Damper Control adapts its responses electronically to the situation at hand, and the Adaptive Drive system - which includes active roll stabilisation - further enhances the driving qualities of the new BMW 6-Series models.

In addition to controlling the amount of speed-dependent steering assistance generated and regulating the steering angle of the front wheels, Integral Active Steering also adjusts the steering angle of the rear wheels. This helps to reduce the amount of steering effort required, provides excellent agility in dynamic driving situations, ensures comfortable and assured responses when changing lanes and navigating through corners, and reduces the car's turning circle.

BMW ConnectedDrive in the new BMW 6-Series model range: Intelligent connectivity for the ultimate in driving pleasure

The progressive nature of the BMW 6-Series is also reflected in its diverse range of standard and optional driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive, which are aimed at optimising convenience, safety and the use of infotainment functions. When it comes to the intelligent link-up of the driver, car and outside world, the new BMW 6-Series Convertible, the new BMW 6-Series Coupe and the new BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe play a stand-out role in their respective market segments.

All new BMW 6-Series models come as standard with the ConnectedDrive navigation package, a hands-free facility with USB interface and a SIM card embedded in the car. The SIM card enables use of the likewise standard Intelligent Emergency Call system and BMW TeleServices, as well as data transfer for other functions, such as ConnectedDrive Services and Real Time Traffic Information for the navigation system.

Important information exactly where you want it: BMW Head-Up Display

One of the highlights of the range of BMW ConnectedDrive driving assistance systems is the BMW Head-Up Display, which projects relevant driving information onto the windscreen using a full spectrum of colour. As well as vehicle speed, 3D graphics also show Check Control messages, navigation information - including lane recommendations, speed limits and overtaking restrictions - and further information supplied by the driver assistance systems in the driver's direct field of view. When required, telephone contact lists and entertainment information can also be displayed.

The multifunction instrument display also contributes to the full-blooded driving pleasure laid on by the new BMW 6-Series. This variant of the cockpit display takes its cues from the mode selected using the Driving Experience Control switch, the graphics and colours of the displays indicating clearly which of the COMFORT, ECO PRO and SPORT settings has been engaged.

Speed Limit Info including No Passing Info display and the Lane Departure Warning system (both options) are also designed to promote assured driving. Meanwhile, the Park Distance Control, rear view camera and Surround View options help to provide a better overview of the area around the car and the road ahead. The BMW Parking Assistant (also optional) helps the driver to identify and drive into parallel parking spaces. Driving enjoyment and safety in darkness are enhanced by the Adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Selective Beam (for optimised high beam use) and the BMW Night Vision system with pedestrian and animal recognition.

Driving Assistant Plus uses intelligent connectivity to optimise safety

Among the other innovative technologies on the options list is the Driving Assistant Plus safety package. This camera and radar-based driver assistance system includes the Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function, the Lane Departure Warning system and a Pedestrian and Collision Warning system with Braking function. This system detects standing vehicles and vehicles travelling ahead and, at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph), also pedestrians who are on a potential collision course with the car. Visual and audible warnings are given if a hazardous situation is detected, and at the same time the brake system is primed in order to reduce the stopping distance. If the driver fails to react to the warning, Driving Assistant Plus automatically brakes the car, if necessary applying maximum deceleration.

ConnectedDrive Services for greater convenience and mobile office functions

An embedded SIM card in the BMW 6-Series models opens up new scope for mobile communications and the use of online services inside the car. Included as standard, ConnectedDrive Services take the levels of convenience and variety offered in the areas of onboard office applications, navigation capability and in-car information to unrivalled heights - thanks to innovative services such as the remote functions and the BMW Online portal. One feature unmatched by the new BMW 6-Series' rivals is the Concierge Service from BMW ConnectedDrive. This option offers the driver a personal information service which - using a mobile phone connection - can be contacted via the iDrive menu around the clock, at the touch of a button and at no additional cost. The staff at the call centre can take care of hotel reservations, for example, look up flight information, seek out addresses of out-of-hours pharmacies or ATM machines and provide information on points of interest. Telephone numbers and addresses for the navigation system can be sent directly from the call centre to the car and then transferred by the driver at the touch of a button into their navigation system.

Many other BMW ConnectedDrive services can be installed at any time using apps, via a smartphone or the embedded SIM card. Among other things, these apps support web radio functions, social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, and the BMW ConnectedDrive range of online entertainment features, which offer access to more than 24 million music tracks and thousands of audio books. This flexible apps concept makes it possible to incorporate not just applications developed by the BMW Group but also "BMW Apps ready" applications from other providers.

Audi A5 Sportback

Ever since their debut, the models of the Audi A5 family - the Sportback, Coupé and Cabriolet - have impressed with their elegance. The flowing silhouettes, the sharp lines and the muscular surfaces make strong statements. The product improvement adds sharp new accents to the design.

The upper corners of the single-frame grille in high-gloss black are beveled. The grille's lateral bars and the Audi rings appear to be sculpted. The new bumper features pronounced air inlets with massive struts, revamped grilles and flat fog lights. Sharply chiseled edges give the engine hood a three-dimensional look; the entire front end appears even flatter and wider.

The headlights have also been updated. Their lower edge forms a wave; their interior has been restructured. With the optional xenon plus headlights, the LED daytime running lights form a narrow, homogenous clasp framing the headlight. Audi also offers the adaptive light system with dynamic cornering light and turning light. The rear lights have also been redesigned and are optionally available with continuous LED light strips. The bumper includes a number of additional details.

The product improvement has added a millimeter (0.04 in) to each of the exterior dimensions. The Audi A5 Sportback is 4.71 meters (15.45 ft) long; the Coupé and the Cabriolet 4.63 meters (15.19 ft). The range of colors has been reshuffled and now comprises 16 colors. The fully automatic acoustic top of the Audi A5 Cabriolet is available in four colors. The S line exterior package is available for those who appreciate an even more dynamic look.

The vehicle bodies impress with high rigidity, outstanding crash safety, high vibrational comfort and low weight. The front fenders are made of aluminum for improved axial load distribution. Aerodynamic fine-tuning measures include a lined underbody.

Interior design

A harmonious balance of proportions and surfaces, fine materials and top-quality fit and finish: The interior of the Audi A5 models reflects the Audi brand culture. It is now more elegant than ever - with new steering wheels, including an option for a flattened ring, new steering column stalks and with narrow chrome clasps framing the control elements.

A button is used to directly adjust the optional seat heating and seat ventilation in three stages. Also updated were the ignition key, the selector lever for the automatic transmission, the button for the optional Audi drive select system and the controls of the high-efficiency air conditioning and multifunction steering wheel. All displays are now illuminated in white.

New paint covers the bezels on the instrument cluster and the center console, and there is also a new selection of upholstery and inlays. The latter are available in Aluminium Trigon or in walnut or natural fine grain ash. Almost all of the interior colors are new. Fine Nappa leather replaces Valcona in the Sportback, and the armrests can also be covered in leather, if desired. The Audi A5 Sportback is also now optionally available as a five-seater.

Another attractive option is the S line sport package. It drapes the interior in black and accentuates it with elegant applications. A sport suspension lowers the vehicle body by 10 millimeters (0.39 in), and 18-inch wheels round out the package. Buyers looking for that special something will find many more customization options in the Audi exclusive range, including the stylish Audi exclusive line with two-tone seat coverings.

Engines

The Audi A5 family sets new standards for sportiness and efficiency. All engines feature forced induction and direct injection for tremendous pulling power. Even the entry level engine produces 320 NM (236.02 lb-ft) of torque. The start-stop system and the recuperation system are standard with all engines - no other manufacturer takes such a rigorous approach. The lineup comprises three gasoline engines and four TDI units. CO2 emissions have been reduced by as much as 22 percent.

The completely redesigned 1.8 TFSI showcases the full extent of Audi's expertise. Groundbreaking innovations can be found in the control of the valves and their lift, the thermal management concept, the injection system, the turbocharger and the integration of the exhaust manifold. In the Audi A5 Coupé, the high end 4 cylinder unit consumes on average just 5.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (41.27 US mpg). This best-in-class value corresponds to 134 grams CO2 per km (215.65 g/mile) and is 21 percent lower than before. With 170 HP, the 1.8 TFSI accelerates the A5 powerfully.

The output of the 2.0 TFSI remains unchanged at 211 HP. New to the Audi A5 lineup is the 3.0 TFSI, a supercharged V6 producing 272 HP.

The diesel engines are also impressively efficient, and the 4 cylinder units feature modifications in numerous areas. Equipped with the 177 HP 2.0 TDI and a manual transmission, the Audi A5 Coupé consumes on average just 4.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (50.05 US mpg) - a CO2 equivalent of 122 g per km (196.34 g/mile) and a milestone in the coupe segment.

Three V6 diesel units round out the lineup on the top end. The 3.0 TDI with 204 HP is the most fuel efficient 6 cylinder unit in its class worldwide. In the Audi A5 Coupé with multitronic, it consumes on average 4.9 liters (48 US mpg) of fuel and emits just 129 grams CO2 per km (207.61 g/mile). The second variant of the 3.0 TDI produces 245 HP. Arriving somewhat later is a particularly low-emissions clean diesel model that will make the Audi A5 the first coupe on the market to meet the Euro 6 diesel standard.

Drivetrain

Audi offers the ideal drivetrain for each engine. A manual 6 speed transmission and the continuously variable multitronic are available for models with front-wheel drive. The quattro models come with a manual transmission or the lightning fast, 7 speed S tronic. All of the transmissions shine with their convenience and precision, high efficiency and wide gear spread. The long ratios in the upper gears reduce fuel consumption.

Members of the Audi A5 family equipped with quattro permanent all-wheel drive and the S tronic transmission also feature the crown-gear center differential with torque vectoring. During normal driving, the mechanical component sends the engine's power primarily to the rear wheels. If necessary, it redistributes the power lightning-fast and smoothly. Up to 70 percent can flow to the front axle, 85 percent to the rear axle. Torque vectoring uses targeted, minor braking interventions to make the handling even more precise.

Available as an option in all Audi A5 quattro models, the sport differential provides for maximum precision and high traction. It uses two superposition stages engaged via multi-plate clutches to actively distribute the torque between the rear wheels as needed.

Chassis

The Audi A5 models set standards for sporty dynamics, luxurious ride comfort and excellent driving safety. Most of the components of the five-link front suspension and the trapezoidal-link rear suspension are made of aluminum. The rear suspension bearings and the damper tuning have been updated for more precise handling and even greater comfort.

The ESP stabilization program with electronic limited slip differential is standard in all front-wheel drive versions of the Audi A5. ESP uses minimal braking interventions at the inside front wheel for even more agility during dynamic driving. The large brakes - with ventilated front and rear discs in many variants - offer excellent stopping power and are very easy to modulate.

17-inch wheels with 225/50 tires are standard. Options include wheels up to 20 inches and 265/30 tires as well as four new wheel designs.

Among the high-end features in the model series is Audi drive select. In the basic configuration, it adjusts the power steering boost, the accelerator characteristic, the shift points of the automatic transmission and the automatic air conditioning. Using a button in the cockpit, the driver can determine whether these components should work in "comfort," "auto," "dynamic" or "efficiency" mode. The latter helps to drive the Audi A5 particularly efficiently. If the car is equipped with a navigation system, there is also an "individual" mode that the driver can largely configure him or herself.

Audi drive select can be combined with additional modules, if desired. These are the sport suspension with damper control, the sport differential and dynamic steering, which steplessly varies the steering ratio by nearly 100 percent as a function of speed.

Another new standard feature in the Audi A5 model series is the electromechanical power steering. An electric motor generates the right amount of boost for the speed being driven. The electromechanical power steering features a direct ratio, reacts instantly and provides precise road feedback. It intervenes slightly to support the driver when braking on a surface with less grip on one side of the car.

The system reduces fuel consumption by up to 0.3 liters per 100 km and up to 7 g CO2/km (11.27 g/mile) because it consumes no energy at all while driving straight.

Assistance systems

The assistance systems in the Audi A5 model series use a variety of technologies to make driving even more controlled. Some of them have been improved with new functions. Among the standard features is the new driver information system with recommendations to take a break. It uses steering motions and additional parameters to detect when the driver is getting tired and issues an appropriate warning.

Audi side assist supports the driver when changing lanes by using radar to monitor the space behind the car. Audi active lane assist - a new feature in the Audi A5 - helps the driver to maintain the lane. A camera detects the lane markings and the system makes slight corrections to the electromechanical steering, if necessary. The adaptive cruise control uses radar technology to maintain a constant interval between the Audi A5 and the vehicle ahead. At speeds below 30 km/h (18.64 mph), it initiates maximum braking in the event of an impending collision.

Infotainment systems

The infotainment systems in the Audi A5 have been significantly upgraded. Audi equips all models in the A5 lineup with a CD radio and eight speakers.

The optional top-of-the-line unit is MMI navigation plus with a large hard drive, seven-inch color monitor, 3D graphics and DVD player. Its controls have been improved. The number of hard buttons has been reduced from eight to four and the volume control now features a joystick cap to make it easier to choose songs. Voice control and digital radio reception also received some fine-tuning.

An additional option is the Bluetooth online car phone. Audi connect is the catchword for the attractive services this phone brings to the A5, which include Google POI search, navigation with Google Earth images and a WLAN hotspot. The hotspot enables passengers to surf the Internet and send and receive e-mail with their mobile devices. Audi traffic information online is an additional service that does a much better job than the familiar TMC standard of providing the driver with extremely precise and current information about the traffic load along the selected route. All the driver needs to use these functions is a data-capable SIM card.

Prices

Despite the extensive product improvement, Audi is raising prices only slightly. The price increase for the Audi A5 Coupé 2.0 TFSI is only €200, for example. The base model, the Audi A5 Sportback 1.8 TFSI, costs €33,350.

The Audi S5

The top models in the series - the S5 as Sportback, Coupé and Cabriolet - have also been refreshed. All S5 models, including the Coupé, are now equipped with the 3.0 TFSI producing 333 HP. Compared to the 4.2 L V8 it replaces in the Coupé, the supercharged V6 consumes on average 20 percent less fuel per 100 kilometers. Average fuel consumption is just 8.1 liters (29.04 US mpg) while performance remains impressive. The S5 Coupé accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 4.9 seconds on its way to an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph).

Visual cues to the updated S models include new lights, modified body details and new crystal-effect paint finishes. Subtle changes can also be found in the interior. The most important technical updates for the Audi S5 are quattro drive with the crown-gear center differential and electromechanical power steering. The special S sport suspension and the standard 18 inch wheels deliver the power to the road.

 Volkswagen CC

When the Volkswagen Passat CC made its debut in 2008, it was the world's first four door coupe in the 30000 to 40000 dollar and euro class. From this niche, a new segment quickly developed - to date, nearly 270000 people around the globe have chosen the saloon with the stylish lines of a sports car. They are car drivers who love the charm of a coupé but also value space for at least 4 persons and 4 doors. Now, Volkswagen is presenting a technically and visually updated version of the popular business vehicle at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. With new front and rear styling, the new Volkswagen CC design makes an even bolder move towards the automotive luxury class. No less is true of its extended range of standard equipment, which now includes such features as bi-xenon headlights with static cornering lights and a new LED rear lighting design. Also standard: fatigue detection, RCD 310 radio-CD system, stainless steel door sill plates and safety head restraints (front seats) with additional front-rear adjustment. In addition, new assistance systems are making their way into the CC. They include optional technologies such as Side Assist Plus including Lane Assist (warns of vehicles in blind spots and supports the driver via steering intervention to avoid an accident), Dynamic Light Assist (automatic main beam control) and a camera-based traffic sign detection system. Meanwhile, the 'climate seat' with integrated massage function optimises comfort.

140 HP to 300 HP - efficient and sporty engines

The Volkswagen CC will be powered by innovative petrol and diesel direct-injection engines; all of the diesels (TDI) are equipped with a Stop/Start system and a battery regeneration mode (which recovers braking energy) as standard equipment. All petrol engines also have battery regeneration functionality. The TDI engines output 140 HP and 170 HP. The petrol engines of the European CC versions develop an impressive 160 HP, 210 HP and 300 HP of power. In the USA, the Volkswagen will once again launch with 200 HP (TSI) and 280 HP (FSI) petrol engines. All engines up to 210 HP may be combined with a dual clutch gearbox (DSG) as an option. The European 6 cylinder version (300 HP) is delivered with DSG and 4MOTION all wheel drive as standard equipment. In the case of the 280 HP US-CC that also sports all wheel drive, a torque converter automatic is used. All engines go to work with excellent efficiency: the 140 HP TDI offered in Europe, for example, together with a manual 6 speed gearbox consumes just 4.7 l/100 km (equivalent to 125 g/km CO2); with DSG fuel consumption is 5.3 l/100 km. The 200 HP TSI - a popular engine in America - attains a fuel economy of 21 (City) / 33 mpg (Highway) with manual gearbox and 22 / 31 mpg in the DSG version.

Design - Volkswagen CC shifts segment boundaries

The team led by Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand, reworked the front and rear body sections of the Volkswagen CC. This has given the Volkswagen an even more elegant yet dynamic overall image. New alloy wheels and car colours complement other exterior modifications.

Front end. In front, the eye is draw to the new designs of the radiator grille, bi-xenon headlights and bonnet. Optional LED daytime running lights are integrated in the headlight housings. Even more than on the previous model, the entire area of the new front bumper, headlights and radiator grille exhibits clean lines that correspond 1:1 to Volkswagen 'design DNA' styling. This DNA is marked by such characteristics as an emphasis on horizontal lines and a concise harmony of the headlights and radiator grille. The latter is no longer designed as a separate V framed by elements in the body colour, rather it forms a visually continuous, charismatic band together with the headlights. Similar to the US-Passat and the Phaeton, the new Volkswagen CC also has an extra air intake beneath the body-coloured bumper. 'Winglets' are integrated in this intake with fog lights arranged next to them.

Despite its independent design, the front end makes a clear statement that the 'comfort coupé' belongs to a global brand. Consider the radiator grille: with its 3 chrome fins it bears a stylistic resemblance to the US-Passat (produced in Chattanooga, Tennessee) and the Phaeton (produced at 'Gläserne Manufaktur' - the Transparent Factory - in Dresden). Like the previous model, the Volkswagen CC is also produced at Volkswagen's plant in Emden, Germany; this state-of-the-art factory has direct access to an overseas port from which the four-door coupé can be shipped to all regions of the world within a few days. Back to the car's design:

Side profile. Although the frameless doors of the VW CC are unmodified, its side profile shows a new look too. Several factors are at work here: in front, the more powerful design of the bonnet - in interplay with the new bumper design - sharpens the car's silhouette. Meanwhile, the much more distinctively sculpted side sills between the wheel housings stand out; they make a visual connection between the front and rear bumpers. At the rear, the bumper now has greater volume and transparency; together with the coupé-like styling of the C-pillars and the very long swept-back rear window, this generates a very special dynamic.

Rear section. As at the front of the car, designers also completely redesigned the rear bumper. This involved modifying the wrap-around chrome strip that is typical of the Volkswagen CC and of course the VW logo, which once again serves as the handle for opening the bootlid. In models with Rear Assist, a rear-view camera was integrated in the VW logo as well. The entire rear section now shows more straight-line surfaces and a greater emphasis of horizontal lines. Also fitting with this image is the new design of the rear lights; at their lower ends, the lights now finish with a horizontal sweep. In contrast to the previous model, the new rear lights have LED lighting elements that exhibit very quick response, economy and long life. The distinctive look of these lights makes the CC unmistakable from the rear, even at night. The licence plate is illuminated with LED lighting, too.

Interior - 4 or 5 seats as needed

The standard seating configuration of the Volkswagen CC includes four seating positions. In front, the car always comes with ergonomic sport seats designed for long trips. In the rear, a continuous bench seat (3 seats) is available as an alternative to the standard system with 2 individual seats. The interior exhibits a style that is as dynamic as it is elegant. The dashboard was already modified once last year; since then, the two storage drawers integrated above the centre console in the first generation CC were replaced by an analogue clock in the style of that in the Phaeton. Another new option is a brown interior; this includes the dashboard, which coordinates especially well with the also reconfigured wood accents and colours of the leather seats.

Standard features - uncompromising comfort and safety

Standard Volkswagen CC equipment has always included such features as dual tailpipes, 17-inch alloy wheels with mobility tyres, sport seats, various cupholders, chrome surrounds on switches and air vents, air conditioner, sport chassis, 'Auto-hold' function, hill start assistant, automatic control of running lights with 'Leaving home' and 'Coming home' functions, automatic bootlid opening from the interior, DCC dynamic chassis control (from 170 HP) and, of course, the ESP electronic stabilisation programme and 6 airbags.

This range of features was considerably extended in the new model. Standard exterior features that were added include the already mentioned bi-xenon headlights, static cornering lights, headlight washing system, LED rear lights, LED licence plate illumination and more prominent side sill flares. New interior features that are standard on all models: fatigue detection system, RCD 310 radio-CD system, front head restraints with longitudinal 'X adjustment', stainless steel door sill plates and (in Germany) the multifunction steering wheel. As an option, the driver can now see which rear seat occupants are buckled up without having to look back - via the 'seatbelt status indicator' in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster. For even better dynamic performance and comfort in fast curves there is the XDS transverse differential lock (from 125 kW). Already offered since 2011, and no less innovative, is a fuel-saving free-wheeling mode for all 100, 103 and 125 kW versions with a DSG dual clutch gearbox; it decouples the engine from the transmission during coasting phases, improving fuel economy.

Optional features - systems of the luxury class

The car's exceptional optional features include the lane-changing assistant Side Assist Plus that integrates the Lane Assist lane-keeping assistant; the combination of these two systems now implemented represents a significant functional extension and a gain in safety. Also new in the Volkswagen CC: the sensor-controlled Easy Open system for opening the bootlid by a foot movement behind the vehicle (in conjunction with Keyless Access), Dynamic Light Assist (dynamic main beam control), Park Assist 2.0 (automatic parking assist for parking spaces either perpendicular or parallel to the roadway with 360° Optical Parking System [OPS]), ACC (adaptive cruise control with Front Assist surroundings monitoring system and City Emergency Braking), DCC (dynamic chassis control), active climate seats (front) with massage function, windscreen (climate comfort window) that is heated without wires and infrared-reflecting as well as noise-insulating side windows made of laminated safety glass. Those wanting to tow a boat or horse trailer will enjoy the electrically deploying towbar that is now available.

Other options available in the new Volkswagen CC include a transparent panoramic sunroof, radio-navigation systems (optionally with integrated camera-based traffic sign detection), sound systems (such as the 'Dynaudio Confidence' with 300 Watts), hands-free telephone units, multimedia interface (MEDIA-IN), garage door opener integrated in the sun visor, ambiance lighting in the door accent panels, 17, 18 or 19-inch alloy wheels, tyre pressure monitoring system (with indicators for each individual wheel), auxiliary heating system and leather options.

Those customers who choose the automatic climate control system will immediately enjoy the benefits of the humidity sensor; this sensor - located near the rear-view mirror inside the car - measures air humidity and regulates the Climatronic system to prevent window condensation and maintain the relative humidity in the passenger compartment at a pleasant level. Another benefit: fuel consumption and emissions are reduced, since the humidity sensor permits operation of the air conditioning compressor only when needed. CO2 emissions are reduced by 1.1 g/km - that might not seem like much by itself, but it becomes significant together with numerous other fuel-saving measures.

Side Assist Plus

The CC is the first Volkswagen in which the lane-changing assistant Side Assist Plus is being offered as a pack together with the lane-keeping assistant Lane Assist. Compared to the individual systems, Side Assist and Lane Assist, the combination of these two systems represents a functional extension and - due to its reliable and urgent warning in case of a specific hazard - a gain in safety.

Here is how the two assistance systems operate as separate systems: Side Assist makes the driver aware of vehicles located in the blind spot next to the Volkswagen CC or vehicles quickly approaching from the rear by flashing LEDs in the door mirrors. Side Assist operates with radar sensors. Meanwhile, Lane Assist accesses the signals from a camera; as soon as it becomes evident that the driver is leaving the driving lane or is driving over the driving lane markings without setting the direction indicator, Lane Assist countersteers.

Here is how the new system duo operates: Side Assist Plus including Lane Assist merges the two assistance systems. If another vehicle is located in the blind spot during a lane change, the dual assistance system pack warns the CC driver via a flashing signal of the LEDs in the right or left door mirrors as well as via a steering wheel vibration, and it simultaneously assists the driver with a corrective steering intervention. These steps are taken regardless of whether or not a direction indicator is set. The combination of these two systems can make an even more effective contribution towards avoiding collisions with other vehicles in the blind spot. However, the driver still assumes responsibility for the entire process.

Fatigue detection

This system detects waning driver concentration and warns the driver with an acoustic signal lasting five seconds; a visual message also appears in the instrument cluster recommending that the driver take a break from driving. If the driver does not take a break within the next 15 minutes, the warning is repeated once. Right at the beginning of each car trip, the system analyses the driver's characteristic steering behaviour. Underway, the fatigue detection system then continually evaluates signals such as steering angle. If monitored parameters indicate a deviation from the steering behaviour recorded at the beginning of the trip, then visual and acoustic warnings are produced. Independent of this monitoring, whenever the system is activated it recommends a driving break to the driver after four hours of continuous driving.

Traffic sign detection: This system detects speed limit signs and no-passing zones via camera, and up to three of these signs are shown on the instrument cluster display in front of the driver as well as in the navigation system display. The screen output shows all additional signage text (e.g. '10 pm - 6 am' or 'When wet'), and it is presented in a logical order. The immediately relevant traffic sign (e.g. '130' km/h) is always shown in the first position, while signs that are only conditionally valid (e.g. '80' km/h 'when wet') are shown in a secondary position. Another highlight: If the rain sensor detects that it has started to rain, the now relevant traffic sign with the added text 'when wet' is shifted to first position. The system also acquires no-passing signs and municipality entrance and exit signs, and it calls the driver's attention to country-specific maximum allowable speeds in cities.

Dynamic Light Assist

Dynamic Light Assist makes manual headlight switching between dipped and main beam a thing of the past. At speeds over 65 km/h the main beam is automatically activated, and it remains permanently active. Here is how it works: in conjunction with the camera integrated behind the front windscreen, the main beam light modules of the optional top version of the bi-xenon headlights (includes LED daytime running lights and AFS) are individually dipped in specific areas in which the system has analysed potential glare to other vehicles in traffic. A masking aperture between the reflector with the mercury-free DS3 xenon filament and the lens makes this function possible. Along with intelligent, lateral swivelling of the entire module (via the cornering light function) and independent control of the left and right headlights, this additional aperture geometry is able to mask the light source. This prevents light glare to oncoming traffic or vehicles driving ahead.

Light Assist

For models whose standard equipment includes bi-xenon headlights but not dynamic cornering lights, a simpler variant of automatic main beam control is available: Light Assist. This main beam assistant is also a camera-based system that analyses the light sources actually occurring in traffic and - based on its knowledge of a wide variety of traffic situations - it outputs a dipped beam or main beam command. The main beam is automatically activated or deactivated from speeds of 60 km/h; this system also offers considerable convenience and safety benefits.

XDS transverse differential lock

The XDS electronic transverse differential lock improves traction in curves. Technically, XDS is a functional extension of the electronic differential lock (EDS) that is integrated in the ESP system. As soon as the electronics detect that the driven front wheel on the inside of the curve unloads too much, the ESP hydraulics builds up brake pressure specifically at this wheel to restore optimal traction. In this way, XDS acts as a transverse differential lock that compensates for understeering in fast driving through curves. XDS makes driving behaviour noticeably more precise and neutral, and the car's handling feels more like that of a vehicle with all-wheel drive instead of front-wheel drive. It improves driving stability and driving fun, because it reduces understeering.

Park Assist, Generation II

In contrast to first generation systems, which only supported parking parallel to the carriageway, the latest parking assistant also assists in perpendicular parking - i.e. at right angles to the driving lane. The system is activated at speeds up to 40 km/h by pressing a button on the centre console. The driver indicates the side of the street for parking by activating the direction indicator for that side. As soon as Park Assist detects a sufficiently large parking space - utilising its ultrasonic sensors - assisted parking can begin: The driver engages reverse gear and then only needs to accelerate and brake. The Volkswagen CC handles the steering. The driver is assisted by acoustic and visual cues on the multifunction display. While parking, Park Assist reduces vehicle speed to 7 km/h. For the first time, this system can also actively brake the car if a collision is about to occur. Nonetheless, the driver remains responsible for braking, since the new braking function of Park Assist cannot guarantee that damage will be prevented in all cases. In addition, a 360° Optical Parking System (OPS) simplifies manoeuvring. OPS shows the vehicle in the colour display of the relevant radio and radio-navigation systems in a bird's eye perspective. Yellow and red signals on the display make it easier for the driver to recognise whether the CC is maintaining sufficient distance to obstacles at the front and rear. An acoustic warning is produced at the same time.

Easy Open

If the new Volkswagen CC is equipped with Keyless Access (automatic locking and starting system), a specific foot motion behind the vehicle is all that is needed to open access to the boot. The human-machine interface here is a proximity sensor in the bumper area, which recognises a kick-like leg motion. Of course, the boot only opens for someone carrying the proper remote key for the CC.

Swivelling towbar

Another innovation in the Volkswagen CC is its swivelling towbar. It is electrically unlatched by pressing a button integrated in the side trim of the boot. This causes the towbar to travel out from its rest position, and then it is easy to swing it into its operating position with a press of the foot. The towbar is designed for loads up to 2.2 metric tonnes.

Remote unlatching of the rear backrest

No less practical is the new remote unlatching of the rear backrest. Levers located under the rear shelf make it easy to unlatch the left and/or right section of the 1/3 to 2/3 split backrest; then it automatically lowers.

Safety-optimised head restraints with horizontal adjustment: From now on, the front head restraints are not only height-adjustable; they can be adjusted horizontally as well - as a standard feature. In this new design, the outer part of the head restraint can be pulled forward. Because it rests closer to the head, it reduces the risk of whiplash in case of an accident.
