VW Polo 1.2 TDI BlueMotion

This is one of the the greenest VW's ever made with a CO2 emission of 87 g/km which is lower than the Toyota Prius or the Honda Insight hybrids (both are having 100 g/km) + it's averaging 3.3 L/100 km (85.6 mpg). Under the bonnet we can find a 1.2 L, inline 3 cylinder, 4 valves per cylinder (DOHC), turbo diesel engine equipped with common-rail direct injection featuring EURO 5 standards with PDF. It has a power output of 75 HP @ 4200 rpm and 180 NM (144 lb-ft) of torque @ 1500-2500 rpm. Fuel economy is lowered by improved aerodynamics: the central grill is filled, a slippery new front splitter and side skirts are fitted, the car is lowered by 10 mm and low rolling resistance rubber wraps around the 15 inch lightweight alloy wheels. All this reduces drag and therefore consumption. A stop/start system nullifies the engine at standstill and a smart alternator captures dissipating engine and brake energy to charge the battery. VW claims these two developments save 0.25 liters per kilometer. The 5 speed manual gearbox also has longer 3rd, 4th and 5th gear ratios although you’ll find using overdrive a rare treat if you’re restricted to urban driving.
