2017 Ford Super Duty teaser

The rumormill says the new Super Duty will be the first series production vehicle to break the four digit barrier for torque. That's right, expect at least 1000 lb-ft out of the updated Power Stroke V8.
We’ve seen plenty of spyshots of the 2017 Ford Super Duty already. Other than the styling and powertrain details, there aren’t a lot of secrets left. It’s a big truck with an aluminum body and (finally!) real door handles. In the perpetual cat and mouse game between auto manufacturers and spy photographers, Ford decided to have a little fun this time, by imprinting “All New Ford Super Duty U.S. Reveal September – State Fair of Texas.” So now we know where it will be shown. But that’s not that big of a revelation either, since the last two generations of Super Duty have also been revealed there.

What we know for sure is that a version of the 6.7 L Power Stroke diesel will carry forth to the new generation, possibly with a modest power bump. Although we’d hardly call the current model with 440 hp and 860 lb-ft of torque underpowered. The gas engine is a bit more of a mystery. The SOHC 6.2 L V8 could carry over, but could also be replaced by a version of the 5.0 L DOHC engine, which produces nearly as much power as the 6.2 L in a more compact, fuel efficient package. Although when you’re hauling around what will likely still be on the north side of 7000 pounds, fuel efficiency is relative.

Speaking of weight savings, simply by virtue of the Super Duty’s size, we’re expecting even greater absolute losses than with the F-150, with losses of 800 or even 1000 pounds possible. As with the F-150, expect Ford to leverage this advantage to even higher payload and towing capacities. The 2015 Texas State Fair runs from September 25 through October 18 in Dallas.
