Mercedes Benz 200 & 220 CDI timing chain lifetime

In all 200 and 220 CDI (common rail diesel injection) engine equipped Mercedes Benz models the timing chain have to be replaced before 250000 km (155342 miles) or it will break! The main problem is that these engines are very silent - thanks to their high quality noise isolation - which is meaning that engine noises aren't audible enough from the inside of the car, so detecting the in question problem by hearing the timing system falling apart/rattling is impossible which is the key issue in this case because when the driver will hear a clink under the bonnet the problem will be already there or maybe it'll be too late. In a scenario like this the engine will have to be rebuilt which will cost a lot so for avoiding this head ache replace the timing chain before 250000 km (155342 miles) which will last until 500000 km (310685 miles). It will be expensive but it's still cheaper option than to rebuild the engine.

If you're going to buy a 200 or 220 CDI (they are having the same 2.2 L engine but with differently tuned ECU; the 200 CDI is a de-tuned version of the 220 CDI) pay attention to the mileage and year of production! ONLY LOOK FOR AN AT LEAST 2004 OR OLDER MODEL BECAUSE THE EARLIER VERSIONS MAY SUFFER FROM VARIOUS PROBLEMS (Between 2000 - 2004 Mercedes Benz almost got bankrupt thanks to the Daimler Chrysler partnership and all models produced in that era are well known for their problematic character).

Models which include these engines:
W203 C-Class (go for the facelifted version: http://allaboutdieselz.blogspot.ro/2015/07/choose-wisely-mercedes-c-class-w203.html), W204 C-Class, W205 C-Class (only the 220 CDI), W210 E-Class (from 2000), W211 E-Class (go for the facelift version: http://allaboutdieselz.blogspot.ro/2015/07/choose-wisely-mercedes-e-class-w211.html), W212 E-Class, W176 A-Class/CLA-Class/GLA-Class/B-Class (they are sharing the same platfom; available in only 220 CDI), W209 CLK-Class and it's re-named in several Sprinter models.
